Camino Scholars Philosophy
“Go home to Nature and let Nature heal you”
-Thich Nhat Hanh
“By walking, we generate peace within our body, our consciousness. We embrace and heal the pain, the sorrow, the fear in us, and that is the ground for helping peace to be a reality in the world.” –Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist monk, peace activist, teacher, poet
As a professor, students approached me not only about their studies, but generally about what was going on in their lives. Any struggles they had in the classroom were often related to struggles outside of it. An empathetic ear from a caring professor was just as important as creating a safe space for learning, allowing give and take in pedagogical practice. I learned from them and they learned from me. I received fulfillment from this aspect of teaching and realized that with Camino Scholars, I can
give people the opportunity to help themselves reflect, discover, and heal if need be. For some, the Camino is a place where they self-reflect, work-out difficulties in their lives, and seek healing. I, myself, walked it for the first time in memory of my mom and dad and young cousin who passed away too early. I had also recently left academia and was dealing with the uncertainty of that journey, and my camino helped me to self-reflect and heal my losses.
Although a religious Catholic pilgrimage, many who walk it now don’t do so for strictly religious reasons or even religious reasons at all. The Camino is religiously and culturally diverse. Your Camino is what you make of it!
